GOOD CORE, BAD CORE?

Exchanging your DPF? Be aware that OEMs will use computerized optical inspection to determine if your used DPF core qualifies for exchange. If it doesn’t, be prepared for a bill-back! You can help avoid the surprise by asking your mechanic to perform these simple checks.

1. VISUAL INSPECTION

Look for dark coloured cells, or signs of soot on the outlet (clean) face of the DPF. These indicate internal flaws such as cracks, melts or failed mounting. DPFs with these problems will be rejected.

2. LIGHT TEST

No light should be visible when directing a bright source at the opposite face of the filter. If any light passes through the DPF there is an internal flaw.

3. PIN GAUGE TEST

A thin wire rod should pass freely down the entire length of each outlet channel. Internal flaws will often block the path of the probe.

A FLOW BENCH TEST WON’T FIND INTERNAL FLAWS

A flow bench test is useful to determine if a DPF has been properly cleaned, but it won’t be able to determine if there are flaws in the DPF core since even a large flaw will not make a significant change in the pressure loss.

CHECK FOR OTHER ISSUES

DPF cores typically do not fail on their own – there’s usually something else involved. Fluid leaks from turbos, EGR coolers, head gaskets or injectors will all damage the DPF. And most of all, check your DOC. Weak DOCs are a leading and often missed cause of DPF failures.
